Lenovo, which is set to become a first-tier vendor in the cloud computing datacenter industry within three years, has reportedly cooperated with Inventec for related product manufacturing, while Samsung Electronics has also partnered with Taiwan-based suppliers to enter the industry; however Inventec has declined to comment about the its partnership with Lenovo.
Since Taiwan makers still have advantages in terms of component purchasing, manufacturing management and logistics, brand vendors which wish to join the cloud computing competition will still need to depend on Taiwan makers to back them up.
Although Lenovo failed to reach an agreement with IBM for the acquisition of the US vendor's server business in its first attempt, sources from the server industry expect the China-based player to continue its negotiations with IBM.
Lenovo is also considering establishing joint ventures with Taiwan-based ODMs for handling server manufacturing after it acquires IBM's entry-level server business, the sources said.
Samsung is also interested in building up its datacenter capabilities; however, there is not yet any news about which makers Samsung will cooperate with.
